David Vasse, an experienced leader in UK education, has been appointed as the new Principal of Sir George Monoux Sixth Form College in Walthamstow, London. Over the past two decades, David has worked at 5 sixth form colleges and brings an exceptionally strong record in improving colleges and transforming performance to Waltham Forest. During his career in education, leadership and management, David has worked for the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills (Ofsted). Previously, from 2010, David was Principal of John Leggott Sixth Form College in Scunthorpe. For 6 years he served as Vice Principal of Alton College in Hampshire. He has also been a teacher of Modern Languages. David specialises in organisational design and people development and holds an MSc Masters in Organisational Development from the University of Sussex. He is also a graduate of the University of Southampton.
David Vasse, Principal of Sir George Monoux Sixth Form College describes his arrival at the College as coming at a significant time: “Monoux is an exceptionally valuable place of learning, with a very bright future. The College has seen an important and positive improvement in students’ success and must now be led confidently and swiftly to a higher level of achievement. We are entering an era of real change, shifting to a sharper focus on how students reach their potential, work hard and take control. In my previous role, in Scunthorpe, students’ achievements were raised to unprecedented levels once students became more ambitious, with very high expectations of themselves.”
The new Principal is determined to maintain the College’s identity as a sixth form college where students make exceptional progression. David said: “Sixth form colleges play a critical role in developing the talent that our economy and London needs. I want our College to support students who haven’t met their potential at GCSE but who have the ability to succeed at Level 3 if well-supported, as well as supporting students who have excellent GCSE grades but who now need to accelerate at Level 3. Regardless of their starting point, what all these students will have in common is the ability to reach a higher destination.”
David’s ambition is to provide young people of Waltham Forest and East London with a compelling post-16 study choice. He said “The sense of us serving our local community, local schools and local agencies is important to me. This is the best possible time for students to come to this College – there is a real fervour across the staff, an excitement about the future of the College, in the context of optimism for learning and skills in London.”
“I can’t wait to get started” says David. He has the track record to support his aspirations. His previous College improved from an inadequate inspection to be one of the highest achieving A Level colleges in the country and his previous college was rated as outstanding by Ofsted in successive inspections. And, he adds, tongue-in-cheek, “As an ardent fan of Southampton Football Club, we can always expect changes alongside the progress that we make!”
Alan Wells, Chair of the Corporation at Sir George Monoux Sixth Form College said “We are delighted to appoint David as our Principal. The selection panel was tremendously impressed with David’s breadth of experience and understanding of post-16 education. We were looking for a Principal that could steer the College through a period of improvement and to build a skilful staff team and David is certainly that leader!”
