Wednesday the 9th of May saw the Monoux Football team travel to Aveley FC for the Essex FA Under 19 Division 2 Cup Final, where they were to meet the 2015 winners of the competition Shoeburyness High. With the sun shining down on the 3,500 capacity stadium, the Monoux supporters in full voice and both teams eager to get their hands on the trophy it promised to be a thoroughly entertaining afternoon!
Shoeburyness started the game with some early pressure but much of the first half was then dominated by Monoux as they began to pass the ball around and find openings in the oppositions defence. Midfielder Art Hoti opened the scoring with a low shot across the goal which found the corner of the net. That was quickly followed up by two excellent finishes from Monoux number nine Temi Babalola, to make the score 3-0 to Monoux inside the first 30 minutes. Shoeburyness were to pull one back just before the end of the half, leaving the score 3-1 at half time and everything still to play for.
It was a nervy start to the second half for Monoux as Shoeburyness managed to get a second goal with a deflected shot which wrong footed the goalkeeper. However, from that point on it was pretty much all one way traffic with Monoux creating chance after chance and eventually getting their reward courtesy of a lovely run and assist from Ethan Stevens, that was calmly finished off by Temi Babalola, who notched his third goal of the game to complete his cup final hat-trick.
Monoux continued to press forward in the later stages but with Shoeburyness still looking dangerous from set plays the game wasn’t over by any stretch. That was until late on when Monoux midfielder Kuene Fernandes collected the ball on the half way line, beat two defenders and rounded the goalkeeper to put the ball in the back of the net and make the score 5-2 to Monoux!
The match was to end 5-2 which meant Monoux were confirmed as cup winners for 2018! This is to add to their victory in the league to make it an historic league and cup double! A fantastic achievement by a group of players who really did play some excellent football throughout the season and thoroughly deserve their victory.
We’d like to congratulate and thank all the students and staff who were involved in Football at the college this year. We look forward to another exciting season in the next academic year!
