Sir George Monoux College are deeply saddened to learn that former Essex Captain, Chairman and President Douglas Insole (born 1926) has passed away over the weekend. Douglas Insole attended Sir George Monoux Grammar School between 1937 and 1944; he was school Captain of the cricket and football teams. The college records praise his captaining and note that he was in a class of his own; he was described as ‘outstandingly brilliant’. His school records state “His batting was attractive, his fielding was faultless and he did not tire easily". The records indicate that Douglas was the Vice-Captain of the Sir George Monoux Grammar School Tennis and Table Tennis teams. He was also the school’s Assistant Editor of The Monovian, the Sir George Monoux Grammar School newspaper.
Last year, Douglas enthusiastically opened the Sir George Monoux College Cricket field on Thursday 30th June. He was delighted in the knowledge that the young people of Waltham forest now have access to outstanding cricket facilities.
