Sport plays a big part in student life at Sir George Monoux College. You will have the opportunity to play both competitively or for recreation and fitness. Many of our teams compete in AOC (Association of Colleges) leagues, cups and tournaments. There is an exciting Sport and Enrichment timetable that runs every Wednesday from 1.30pm, as well as timetabled weekly lunchtime and after college sessions.
We offer a wide variety of sports, which include recreational sport, health and fitness and representing the College in a competitive team. Student opinions and feedback are encouraged widely in the College and Sports is no exception. Thanks to students’ requests, this year we have added American Football (NFL), Rugby and Volleyball to our sports provision.
We have fully qualified instructors and coaches for all of our sporting activities, including gym instructors.
Monoux Cricket Programme
We are partnered with the Essex County Cricket Club and are one of their Inspirational Colleges. Over the summer we launched the Monoux Cricket Programme. Curriculum and Cricket
Our partnership with Essex enhances the curriculum and gives us opportunities to make subjects come alive. Examples of this include:
- Learn to sign players (Law)
- How does Duckworth-Lewis work? (Maths)
- Design a cricket website (IT)
- Run you own cricket league (Business)
- What does it really take to be a sports team’s physiotherapist? (Sport)
- Technical Drawing (Art)
Students on the cricket Program can access the following – coaching courses, umpiring courses, activators courses. We also have a student cricket group who help make decisions about when and where we run our cricket
The College is ideally placed for high quality sports provision. Our College site has a Sports Hall, a brand new indoor gym, an outdoor gym and a fantastic grass pitch for football.
To supplement this we also have partnerships with University of East London’s SportsDock, Peter May Sports Centre, Waltham Forest Pool and Track, Lee Valley Athletics Centre, The Score Centre (Leyton Orient) and Wadham Lodge. We are based only 20 minutes from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford.
